The Magical Powers of Social Media
Written on the 23rd of July 2010 by Daniel Preistley
The final scene of the movie “The Last Samurai” sees Tom Cruise running into battle with his Samurai comrades dressed in their proud kimonos with their stunning swords drawn… only to be met by 20 year old solder wielding a gatling gun.
As a shower of bullets rained down on their confused ranks their final thoughts must have been that despite the beauty and tradition of their craft they simply couldn’t stand a chance against this new, powerful, magical technology.
This must be the feeling in corporate offices across the world who’ve taken too long to acknowledge that Social Media is not some little fad. It’s the very reason their best staff have left, their customers are being met with more engaging competition and their huge profits are being dispersed to budding entrepreneurs all over the world.
Social Media has changed the way we work, play and even relax. More than ever it’s the way people chose to engage with businesses, organisations and individuals.
Those who are using it effectively can’t help but feel like they had just been given magical, super powers.
We now have the magical powers to access the thoughts of any great leader, celebrity or friend through Twitter.
We have the super-power to stay connected with every person we’ve ever met through facebook.
We can broadcast ideas, memories and opportunities to the world on video, audio, images or text through YouTube, Slideshare, Flickr or iTunes.
We can see and hear what’s going on all over the planet, live as it unfolds through UStream and Online Media.
We can answer every question we can dream up in as much detail as we care to know. Google, Wikipedia, Slideshare and Yahoo Answers ensure you never have an unsolved mystery in your mind except of course the deep philosophical question “What will I do with all of this information?
Strangely enough it is all free, meaning that this immense power is no longer in the hands of the few it belongs to the many.
A cool hippie-chick once said to me that she wished she would be around to see a shift in conciseness on the planet.
Unfortunately for her, she isn’t spending enough time online to witness it. Magical shifts are happening right under the noses of anyone who has embraced Social-Media.
About the Author...
Daniel Priestley started out as an entrepreneur at 21 years old and has since built several successful businesses in the UK, Australia and Singapore.
His belief is that an Entrepreneur Revolution is unfolding. Daniel predicts that a great trend towards self employment is emerging. In the same way that the Industrial Revolution caused a sea change from cottage industry to factory labour, the entrepreneur revolution will provide the chance for billions of people to turn their passion into their own small business.
Several trends are converging that give a serious upper hand to small business over big business. In the future, the only big businesses that will survive will be the ones that figured out how to partner with a lot of small businesses.
Highly talented people will identify themselves as entrepreneurs rather than employees. Work on demand will replace careers and people will get involved in projects as opposed to roles.
Daniel Priestley was featured in the Book “Secrets of My Success” along side some of the worlds most well known entrepreneurs. He’s also currently writing his own book due to be published in mid 2010.
